What does the treatment involve ?

The initial assessment and treatment will take up to 90 minutes. The assessment will involve a subjective examination including questions such as:

  • How you feel
  • Your general symptoms
  • What you feel you need
  • Your general health
  • Quality of sleep
  • Energy levels
  • Emotional state
  • Digestive health
  • Thirst
  • Body temperature

Followed by an objective examination:

This will involve observing your face and eyes. It also includes an examination of your tongue and an assessment of your pulse.

This helps me understand the causes of your skin issues and what should be focused on to improve the condition of your skin. Following the examination, a clinical diagnosis will be made and a treatment plan is then set up for you.

The treatment typically consists of at least six, and up to ten treatment sessions for best results. Occasional subsequent follow up treatment sessions will maintain the effect.

Following the initial assessment to help identify your specific needs, the needles will be inserted into acupuncture points on your body (distal points) as well as specific facial acupuncture points to treat you and any underlying health problems that may be contributing to your skin concerns.

The treatment involves the painless insertion of a series of hair-fine needles into strategic points of the face and body to enhance energy, blood flow and collagen production. It is often described as a very relaxing experience.

Needling the distal points will address any underlying health problems that could be contributing to your wrinkles or ‘lack lustre skin’. For example, combatting the negative effects of poor sleep will greatly help the the cosmetic effects of the sessions.

The aim of the treatment is to set up slight irritation in order to improve oxygen flow, boost collagen production and prompt the skin to regenerate itself.

Three to five needles are inserted into each wrinkle mimicking an incision, telling the body it has been injured. This stimulates the skin’s natural healing process – knitting together molecular fibres in the skin.

The treatment can involve inserting up to 70 hair fine needles into the face and on average approximately 12 distally. Some of the needles are silicone coated, enabling them to enter the skin with the minimum of friction (ie no pain). In addition, gold needles are used. I use special 24k gold plated needles for optimum results.  Gold has a more stimulating effect on the skin tissues and acupuncture points, hence it significantly promotes blood circulation and cell regeneration. These needles have been specifically designed for cosmetic acupuncture therapy.

Following needling to the prime site (usually the face) the appropriate distal acupuncture points are needled to address the underlying needs of the clients.

The needles are retained for up to 45 minutes. Occasionally heat may be applied to the face to enhance the needle effect or indeed a gentle electrical stimulation may be utilised – the treatment is intensely relaxing and does not hurt.

Because TCM sees the body as a whole, hence the term holistic, the benefits are inclusive: no one feature is singled out for improvement so the results are very natural and subtle.

Treatment may also include

  • Shiatsu
  • Facial Massage
  • Guasha Treatment
  • Facial Exercises
  • Dietary Advice
  • Jade Roller Treatment

All needles are sterile, single-use needles and are disposed of to comply with local authority regulations.
